Kia Sorento
Spacious, genuine all-terrain vehicle, Kia Sorento is also a bargain - starts at $18,000 while the top model (little left to be desired there; tiptronic included, for example) ends at $26,000.
Unlike most other “city SUVs”, you can rely on this 4×4 wheeler to get you out of the trouble … on any terrain.
First Sorento was introduced back in 2003 - it had an engine too weak for such a car. Things improved a lot with 2006 facelift.
Diesel engine gained some refinment (2003 model was too noisy and not responsive). Petrol engine was improved too.
Although great for cruising, it is tad slow on kick-down, which makes overtaking somewhat difficult. Driving a Sorento after being used to smooth ride of RAV4, for example, can be a bit painful experience. Shifting gears is imprecise at low speeds, steering requires more strength than one would expect. This is not a women’s car. But, it has a friendly 4×4 system - just sit back and let auto system work out the dodgy terrain.
Interior is comfy, with more than enough space for tall passengers, even at back seats. Storage area is almost twice as big as one at Honda CRV, for example. It still is noisy, especially diesel at high speeds, with a noticeable tire noiseKIA Sorento is big on looks, big on value, but also it’s big on ability. If you don’t mind somewhat rough ride and noise, this is a perfect SUV for a family of four adventurers.
